Gross vs. Net: A Real Example
Sarah (single mom, 2 kids) earns $2,800/month gross.
- Rent + utilities = $1,200
- Child care = $400
- After deductions → Net = $1,600 → Eligible!
She gets $535 – (0.3 × $1,600) = $55 in SNAP benefits.
Elderly or disabled? Skip the gross income limit entirely. Asset limits don’t apply the same way either.
Deductions Masterclass
Your net income = gross income minus allowable deductions. This is where most people qualify—even if they’re slightly over the gross income limit.
| Deduction | Amount (2026) | Notes |
| Standard | $209 (1–3 ppl) → $299 (6+) | Automatic |
| Earned Income | 20% off wages | Self-employed? Subtract business costs first |
| Shelter | Up to $744 | Rent + utilities over 50% of income after other deductions |
| Homeless | $190 flat | No receipts needed |
| Utilities | Heating/Cooling $333 → Phone $50 | Pick the highest one |
| Medical | $103 flat or actual >$35 | 60+ or disabled only |
| Child Care | Full cost | For work/school |
| Child Support Paid | Full amount | Court-ordered |
